Sadly, shortly before the election campaign we had to close down the orphanage in Farah. We relied on a few Afghan supporters and donations from abroad, but it was no longer enough to keep the orphanage running. This was a very upsetting day for me and for all my colleagues. It was difficult to say goodbye to these children. Many of them went back to their families, even though they were desperately poor and could not afford to send their children to school.

One of my hopes in running for Parliament was to push for funding for much-needed projects like this orphanage. Distant provinces like Farah were always left behind with no support. In fact, with the domination of warlords and the ubiquitous corruption in our government, very few projects like our orphanage ever received funding. Most international agencies attach conditions to their grants in order to control their recipients. And they won't fund projects run by critics of warlords, the Afghan government and foreign occupation.
